Jennifer and I were downstairs at about 9:00 at night when we could hear the little feet running around upstairs. When I went up there I found Carter in our bathroom with bottles and pills scattered around the floor. He had gotten 2 bottles open. He would not say if he had eaten any of them but did say they were “yucky”. Jennifer actually tried one of the pills and agreed they were yucky ans was pretty sure there was no way he woudl have eaten one. We were obviously concerned but then Carter ran into his room and when we followed him in there we found 2 more bottles of opened pills on the closet floor, and then 2 more unopened in his bed. We immediately got on the phone with poison control and 2 of the bottles he had gotten open were not a problem; however the other 2 bottles would only be a problem if he had swallowed a combination of 10 pills. We felt there was no way he had swallowed that many but we couldn’t be sure so off Carter and I went to the emergency room. The nurses seemed a little annoyed that we could not give a definitive answer on if or how many pills he had tried. The pills were old and we could not guarantee how many were in the bottle before he got them open. Carter got an IV and they took some blood to run some tests. Next they took Carter in to get an X-ray to see if they could see pills in his stomach. We then just had to wait until the tests came back. I got annoyed with Carter because he seemed to be enjoying the excitement and was having a great time. There was a TV in the room so he could watch cartoons. He also got a pirate hat and a new blanket the hospital let him keep. We were at the hospital for about 5 hours in all and arrived home after 3:00 AM. I then got a few hours sleep before going to work. When I got home the next day, Jennifer told me how Carter had been bragging all day about his “FUN” trip to the hospital. It has been difficult convincing him that it was not a good thing. Now in our defense, the pills were not in a drawer where our kids could easily get to them. They were in our closet on the top shelf behind some towels. He stacked up someboxes to reach them. Carter did later admit that he thought they were candy so I can’t fault him for trying to get them but we are not sure how Carter even knew they were there because I don’t think we have gotten anything from there in a while. He had to climb up three shelves to get pills so props to him for accomplishing this and managing to pull the box down. Colby has been hired as our Carter watcher to make sure he does not sneak out of the room at night.
